<strong>Manchester United cruised into the fourth round of the Capital One Cup after seeing off the challenge of Ipswich Town at Old Trafford with a 3-0 victory.</strong><br /><br />After falling at the second-round hurdle to MK Dons last season, the Reds, entering a stage later this term thanks to Champions League qualification, progressed with ease against the Championship outfit thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Andreas Pereira, who netted his first senior goal for the Reds, and substitute Anthony Martial.<br /><br />Following last season’s shock exit in Buckinghamshire, van Gaal opted for a strong first XI, which included a first start for Pereira, who lined up on the left in front of stand-in left-back Ashley Young. Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy, meanwhile, rang the changes as he named a completely different side to the one that drew 1-1 at home to Birmingham last weekend.<br /><br />The Reds and Pereira almost made the perfect start two minutes in when the ball dropped to the wide man from a Mata free-kick. He smashed an effort against a post but the flag had already gone up for offside against Ander Herrera. Soon after, Pereira took aim from 25 yards but Bartosz Bialkowski did well to hold on to the well-struck drive.<br /><br />Backed by large travelling support, believed to be around 5,500, Ipswich seemed content to let United have the ball. Possession has not been a problem for the Reds this term, but turning that domination into goals has at times. Thankfully, 23 minutes in, United made it count as Rooney put the hosts ahead. A long ball forward from Daley Blind was brilliantly controlled by the skipper who saw off the challenge of a defender before finishing with aplomb with his left foot.<br /><br />A neat link-up between Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata on the edge of the box forced Bialkowski to make a decent save from Mata’s outside-of-the-boot strike six minutes later, while the only effort of any note from the visitors came on the stroke of half-time when Tommy Oar flashed a shot just wide of David De Gea’s right-hand post.</div>

Ipswich seemed like a different team at the start of the second period, the first five minutes of which they dominated. They pressured the ball and threw a couple of dangerous crosses into the box from the off, but United’s defence were up to the job.<br /><br />Indeed, it didn’t take long for the Reds to get a grip back on the game and Antonio Valencia, in at right-back in place of Matteo Darmian, blasted a low drive at Bialkowski who punched it into the air and was relieved to see one of his defenders hook it clear.<br /><br />There was nothing the Ipswich stopper could do about Pereira’s superb free-kick on the hour-mark though as the youngster netted his first senior goal in sublime fashion, curling home from 25 yards in front of the Stretford End.<br /><br />Mata was next to have a go from distance, letting fly with a left-foot shot from 25 yards, but Bialkowski was there to tip it over. That was to be one of Mata’s last pieces of action with the Spaniard replaced by Martial and Phil Jones also coming on, for his first appearance of the season, in place of Chris Smalling.<br /><br />Martial got into the action straight away and, two minutes after coming on, fired just wide after being set up by Rooney.<br /><br />Pereira went close to netting his second of the night four minutes from time when his close-range shot was well saved, but the Ipswich keeper couldn't keep out United's man of the moment as Martial took a chested pass from fellow substitute Memphis in his stride and coolly slotted home in injury-time as the Reds deservedly booked a place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.</div>

The French summer 
signing executed two impressively composed finishes either side of the 
half-time break to overturn Graziano Pelle’s opener at St Mary’s. Juan 
Mata enhanced the lead and Italian striker Pelle bagged his second to 
set up a tense finale, though the Reds held on to claim an excellent 
result that closes the gap on leaders Manchester City to just two points
 following their home defeat to West Ham.<br />
Luke Shaw was 
unavailable to play against his former club after breaking his leg at 
PSV Eindhoven and Louis van Gaal selected Marcos Rojo to fill in at 
left-back, allowing Daley Blind and Chris Smalling to maintain their 
promising partnership in the middle. Wayne Rooney and Morgan 
Schneiderlin were recalled to the starting XI, with Martial also making 
his first Premier League start.<br />
The match began at an even pace 
with both teams enjoying separate spells of possession in midfield, 
although it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when
 Pelle pounced on David De Gea’s parried save from a Sadio Mane effort 
to shoot underneath the Spanish goalkeeper. The towering Italian, who 
scored in this fixture last season, then hit the outside of the post 
with a low shot just moments later that prompted a visibly angry De Gea 
to berate his defenders.<br />
Memphis saw a looping header arc over 
Maarten Stekelenburg’s crossbar on 24 minutes as United – wearing the 
black adidas third kit – attempted to restore parity on the south coast.
 But it was far from easy against a home side that was defending with 
all 11 men behind the ball, while pressing high up the pitch with an 
intensity that has earned plenty of praise during Ronald Koeman’s reign 
as boss.<br />
Thankfully, van Gaal’s men broke through the mass ranks 
to equalise in the 34th minute and it was our new no.9, Martial, who did
 the honours, receiving the ball on the edge of the six-yard area before
 showing impressive composure to execute a low finish past 
Stekelenburg.<br />
United almost took an unexpected lead prior to the 
half-time break when Memphis intelligently played in Mata from a corner 
kick, with the Spaniard then slipping another pass inside for Blind to 
shoot wide from close-range, wrapping up an intriguing and entertaining 
opening 45 minutes at St Mary’s.<br />

 second half began with both managers making tactical changes as Matt 
Targett replaced Cuco Martina and Antonio Valencia usurped Matteo 
Darmian, although Martial picked up exactly where he left off by scoring

livewire latched onto a sloppy backpass from Saints defender Maya 
Yoshida to execute another cool finish to inspire repeated chants of “Oh
 Anthony Martial” from United’s ecstatic travelling fans. <br />

 end was quickly singing the name of De Gea as well after the Player of 
the Year produced an astounding one-handed save to claw Jose Fonte’s off
 the line ahead of the hour mark, when van Gaal made his second 
substitution by introducing Bastian Schweinsteiger for Michael Carrick.<br />

Southampton
 appeared to tire as the clock ticked on and United took full advantage 
as Memphis struck the post with a powerful effort that bounced back into
 the direction of Mata, who guided a neat finish into the bottom corner 
to bag his second goal of the season following his first at Swansea

Although United appeared in complete control in the final 
stages of Sunday’s match, as several Southampton players went down to 
ground with cramp, the hosts did manage to hit back and set up a tense 
finale as Pelle rose admirably to head Mane’s cross past a helpless De

The Spanish no.1 was then required to produce another 
acrobatic save to repel Victor Wanyama's long-range effort, as van

Yet just as Van Gaal has already demanded that his United players change how they look at the game, one potential consequence is that it may lead to the club changing how they look at the Champions League, too. His idiosyncrasies may reverse another traditional view because for all of United's history in the competition since Matt Busby first defied Football League instructions to bring the Busby Babes onto the continent back in 1956, the grand European Cup trophy has represented an elevated but often elusive symbolic prize.</div>

United have only won the competition after suffering long nights of the soul and getting to a point of readiness after an extended period of domestic dominance. They've never done anything close to what Chelsea did in 2012. They've won it only when they've patently been among the best in Europe, around the level of the current Barcelona or Bayern Munich.</div>

That rationale is not solely down to the football. It's also down to the nature of the competitions. Domestic leagues don't really allow for upsetting the odds. If a team wins, it's because they're the best in the country, winning enough games over a complete schedule. The one concern with Van Gaal's controlled approach is that United will draw too many matches because they can become predictable.</div>

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho summed up the contradiction last season. "Sometimes [winning the Champions League] is not a consequence of great work," he said in November. "You can win the Champions League in your worst season. A knockout competition is something that always has a big percentage of unpredictability."</div>

That unpredictability has been tempered somewhat by the dominance of the wealthy superclubs, as it seems only about nine teams are capable of winning it. This is a point Mourinho was touching on, though, and one relevant to United. If you're wealthy enough, just being in the Champions League means you always have a chance. United are wealthy enough. Their immense resources should give them a foothold in the latter stages. Van Gaal's football should greatly strengthen that foothold.</div>

As long as you keep that foothold in games and stay competitive, you need only three pieces of inspiration or luck and you can suddenly find yourself in a final.</div>

They can give Van Gaal a real look-in at the competition, and perhaps a much better chance than in the Premier League. They could also prove to be the difference.</div>

Gary Neville claims Manchester United are only three players away from challenging for the title.

Despite six consecutive Premier League wins, even a victory at Chelsea on Saturday evening won’t help United catch Jose Mourinho’s men this season.

But Old Trafford legend Neville believes three more signings could see his old side match Chelsea next term.

“If you asked me three months ago, I would have said [United] were a long way behind,” said Neville, at the launch of the Budweiser Dream Goal competition. “Now, it’s not as far.

“Two or three months ago, they would have been thinking Chelsea are a long way in front of us. Now the recruitment battle that will happen in the summer becomes critical. If they get that right, United will feel confident they can challenge Chelsea for the title next season

“I don’t think this summer is a case of United rebuilding or total restructure of the squad. They need to continue to improve in two or three positions: a central defender, a midfielder and a winger.

“It is a case of trading well, rather than wholesale buying. I don’t expect another £150million spend. I don’t think it is required.”

Neville believes it is the attitudes of the two managers which will decide the outcome oin Saturday evening.

Juan Mata can make Jose Mourinho eat his words and revive United’s outside chance of snatching the title from Chelsea’s grip.

It would be one of the Reds most sensational title wins if manager Louis van Gaal could pull it off and engineer a late Chelsea collapse and see off the North London charge from Arsenal.

Mata is returning to the Stamford Bridge stage where he was adored by Chelsea fans and twice voted the club’s Player of the Year has all the hallmarks of a story that could just change the landscape of the race for the Premier League crown.

Mourinho allowed Mata to move north in January 2014 for £37.1m. He didn’t want a Cesc Fabregas replica with designs on the Barcelona man he finally bought last summer.

The key to Saturday’s tea-time battle at the Bridge is likely to centre around the midfield and hand Mata the perfect chance to humble his former boss.

And United’s 26-year-old midfielder has helped lead Van Gaal’s engine room in a much-needed goalscoring revival.

The Reds midfield had struggled to provide back up to Wayne Rooney in the attack while Chelsea’s department had under-pinned the contribution of leading scorer Diego Costa.

But when the call to arms came at the start of United’s critical period last month, Mata and Co have stepped forward and in the four-match winning streak that has accounted for Spurs, Liverpool, Aston Villa and City.

United’s engine room has weighed in with nine of the 11 strikes in the most productive scoring period of Louis van Gaal’s reign as Old Trafford manager.

That’s a phenomenal and much needed 81 per cent of United’s goals in the four-match blitz that has eased the nail-biting tension of the battle for a place in the top four to ensure that elite Champions League football returns to Old Trafford next season.

Mata is leading the way with three goals in that run of wins taking his total to eight for the season.

Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera have also added a couple each in the last month to up their campaign hauls to five apiece.

The spring goal rush has seen United’s midfield contribution over the season boosted to 21 goals in the Premier League and they are now just four behind Mourinho’s midfield six who have 25 between them.

Without the injured Costa, Chelsea have been forced to reinstate veteran hitman Didier Drogba but it’s 12-goal Eden Hazard and co that United’s midfield need to wipe out on Saturday.

Mata’s nemesis – Fabregas – is on a high because his late strike at QPR last weekend rescued the struggling league leaders and saved them dropping two points.

But Mata, too, is bubbling after his derby goal against City and the 2012 Chelsea title winner’s his stage is beckoning again on the Kings Road in an ironic twist.

United won six successive league games earlier this season in a run peppered with fortuitous victories at Arsenal, Southampton and against Liverpool. Their latest half-a-dozen run, though, has been controlled and deserved.

The manner of United's victory that will have their fans purring. Van Gaal boasted they could 'go on the streets and hold their heads up', which is wise advice should they choose to enjoy a night out on Deansgate Locks.

"Of course," Van Gaal beamed when asked if he had enjoyed the atmosphere. Old Trafford bristled with defiance last season and at the weekend the chants were jovial, instead of jaded, on an afternoon the attendance announcement was latched on by the natives to highlight the chasm between Reds and Blues.

Even when City briefly resembled the force of last season's champions in those fretful first 15 minutes for United Van Gaal's men responded.

Sunday was the first Premier League victory United had registered under Van Gaal from a losing position, and the first since the 2013 Boxing Day comeback at Hull. United had not defeated City, having trailed, in a competitive derby since the fraught 1996 FA Cup fifth round tie.

City struck within 43 seconds at Old Trafford last year and United never looked remotely capable of levelling, never mind overcoming Edin Dzeko's tap-in. And despite City's dominance in those opening 15 minutes on Sunday, when Phil Jones and Chris Smalling looked as flustered as party leaders in front of television cameras, United didn't suffer stage fright.

Van Gaal has lurched from defensive crisis to identity crisis to attacking crisis yet United have regained their identity. 'The United Way' is a mythical method but the hallmarks of their great sides are evident again; they are clinical, quick and there is an emphasis on wing play. United had seven shots on target against City and three of their four goals came via crosses.

Daley Blind and Ashley Young's combination on the left is one of the unlikelier success stories of Van Gaal's reign. A coach renowned for his innovation, he has selected a defensive midfielder (Blind), a right-sided midfielder (Antonio Valencia), a playmaker (Juan Mata) and an out-and-out winger to enliven United's flanks. Even under Sir Alex Ferguson United were too rigid and inflexible, whereas under Van Gaal they boast greater variety.

Centrally, Ander Herrera is the midfielder United have yearned for since 2008 and, irrespective of the listless Yaya Toure's decline, witnessing Marouane Fellaini reduce the once indomitable Ivorian to an aerial anxiety attack was an overwhelming sight.

As Marouane Fellaini trotted on to make his Manchester United debut against Crystal Palace in August 2013, the Stretford End started singing 'United afro, United afro'.

And in between the big Belgian almost heading Pablo Zabaleta into the stands and scoring United's second in the 4-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday, it was back. A nod to Fellaini's big hair on a day when he looked, finally, like a big player.

Until recently, the fans didn't have much cause to sing about him at all. Moan about him on the tram home, maybe. But not sing.

Now, though, Louis van Gaal has found a way to play to his strengths. Wayne Rooney said after the derby he's 'getting used in the right way'.

Reading between the lines, he means not at the base of midfield while players with far superior technical ability pass round him.

He's being allowed to do what he does best, however agricultural that may be.

“He's a handful for defenders to mark,” said Rooney.

“We like to play out from the back and if teams are pressing us then we have him as an option.

“He is probably the best in world football at bringing the ball down and getting us out of that pressure and further up the pitch.

“He is being used in the right way by the manager and he is repaying the manager with goals and good performances.”

Having convinced his manager and his team-mates, Fellaini is also winning over the fans.

As Mitchell Johnson was terrorising England's batsmen during the 2013 Ashes, Mike Atherton said 'cricket is a far better game when there is a physical threat'. The same, within reason, is true of football.

No one wants to see broken legs or eyes gouged out.

But there's nothing wrong with a bit of aggression. And as a man who seems, at times, to be made almost entirely of sharp edges, Fellaini has plenty.

His goal against City was celebrated wildly.

But so was every time he barged Yaya Toure off the ball or left Martin Demichelis in a crumpled heap on the floor.

It was a nice change of pace for United fans who have watched their team rolled over by City too many times in the last five years.

But now what? In the era of possession stats and pass completion ratios, physicality isn't often celebrated. Diego Simeone is happy to encourage a bit of nasty at Atletico Madrid, but the real praise is reserved for the beauty of Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Fellaini looked out of place in the biggest games last season, particularly, as it happens, against Bayern Munich.

But it wasn't that his skills weren't relevant in a such a high-level game, it was simply that he wasn't encouraged to use them at all.

There will be a temptation to think of Fellaini as just a vehicle to get United into the Champions League, that when it comes to actually playing in Europe next season, he'll be cast aside.

But seeing a 6ft 4ins midfielder charging towards the back post to get on the end of a cross will worry Spanish, Italian and German teams just as much as it worried City on Sunday.

Having played a key part in getting United to the next level under Van Gaal, he should still have a role to play once they are there.

 Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has conceded that his side may not be capable of winning the Premier League title, but insists he knew that before the defeat against Swansea City.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday and despite stating throughout pre-season that he wants the club to challenge for first place, he has admitted that it is not possible with his current squad.

Asked if the players at his disposal are good enough to win the title, Van Gaal replied: "That is not the question because I know that before this game.

"But also with other players it's also a question of if they can play like a team and if they can reach the level. And today we don't reach that level and then you cannot play as a team so easily.

"And that we have seen today. But in spite of that we could have won also. But when you don't play like a team and you miss the chances then it's very difficult because every team should also create possibilities or chances against us. Because we are playing with a big space behind us. That's always difficult to defend."

Van Gaal fielded youngsters Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard in a 3-5-2 formation at Old Trafford after losing a raft of experienced players on free transfers and new signing Luke Shaw to injury.

And he says he already knew of the importance of signing new players before Saturday's defeat.

"Yes, but I have thought that before this match also so that is not the difference," he added. "But when we are playing in the USA, I thought the same. I know in what positions we need a better player. But you have to buy only when the player can fulfil the way of playing what I ask. And we have to wait and see. But we could have won today also."

On the subject of showing players the Old Trafford exit door, Van Gaal added: "I don’t think it’s only up to me, it’s up to the players to decide because we have given them problems. I shall tell the players what I think and what I want from them but I shall never say they have to go."

United fell behind to a Ki Sung Yeung goal in the first half, but even after Wayne Rooney equalised with an acrobatic effort from close range it was Gylfi Sigurdsson who struck the decisive goal.

And Van Gaal admitted he made the decision to ditch his much-heralded 3-5-2 system during the first half.

"[I decided to change] in the first half. They made the pitch very big and we had to press in front, so 4-3-3 is better system to press. In the beginning we did well, we scored, and we had chances to make it 2-1 but chances are not enough, you have to [score] the chances.

"I think that we can do it with both systems. You have seen the first half that we are not playing very good and we are behind and that's why I have changed the system and this system they have played always in Manchester United.

"And then I changed it again. So I do everything to win. And to my players I cannot say that you didn't do your utmost best. Unbelievable work and fantastic mentality they have shown. But reaching the level is different, not only running but also using your brain and then you can play like a team. But that we have failed today."

Manchester United are continuing talks with Sporting Lisbon over a deal to sign Marcos Rojo, according to Sky sources.

United are unwilling to increase their bid of £16million for the Argentina defender, with reports in Portugal suggesting Sporting may accept that amount if a United player goes in the opposite direction on loan.

Sources suggest Rojo is unlikely to play for Sporting again. He was suspended by the club after refusing to train last week, and missed the club's league match on Saturday.

Rojo is now expected to make the move to Old Trafford but if the deal does fall through, United will turn their attention to Stuttgart's Antonio Rudiger.

Sporting have been holding out for more for Rojo as they only own 25 per cent of the player.

Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Nani are the only recognised senior wingers at Van Gaal's disposal leading into the 2014-15 campaign, and the trio are yet to fully convince in Manchester.

Di Maria - who is reportedly surplus to requirements at Real Madrid following James Rodriguez's arrival - appeared destined for Paris-Saint Germain, only for the French champions to end negotiations after being priced out of a deal.

PSG's decision not to sign Di Maria has opened the door for United and Van Gaal has dropped a major hint that the club could launch a bid for the Argentina international due to a lack of depth out wide.

"At this moment, we have five number nines and four number 10s – and we don't have wingers to give us attacking width," he told reporters.

"Or, I should say, we don't have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that.

Left-back Luke Shaw and central midfielder Ander Herrera have already arrived at Old Trafford but Van Gaal is still eyeing reinforcements.

Netherlands international and Ajax defender Daley Blind is reportedly on Van Gaal's list of targets as he attempts to bolster his defence and the 63-year-old insists he would have no problem recruiting Dutch players.

"If they are at the level I want them to be, then I will sign Dutch players," he said.

"Nationality isn't something that concerns me.

"But Dutch players are usually cheaper than players of other nationalities and they have usually been very well educated in the Netherlands, I believe.

"But they have to be of a level than can play well in the English Premier League. You have to ask if that is the case with every player."

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Two goals in three minutes saw Manchester United prevail over Liverpool in the 2014 International Champions Cup final here on Monday night, winning them the second edition of the stateside preseason tournament. Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata scored in the 55th and 57th minutes, respectively, to wipe out Steven Gerrard's 14th-minute penalty. Jesse Lingard put up the final 3-1 score in the 88th minute.

"It's nice for the fans in the United States of America but also back home that we beat Liverpool. It's not our favorite opponent, I think," United manager Louis van Gaal said after the match.

Depsite the loss in the ICC final, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was rather upbeat post-game.
"It was a really good game, obviously for both teams at the end of the pre-season," Rodgers said. "I thought we were well worth the lead and maybe should have had another penalty. We conceded a disappointing goal and then very quickly conceded a second goal and so the game started getting stretched a wee bit. But overall I'm delighted with the whole tournament, what it's done for us."
The contest started in a spooky setting here at Sun Life Stadium. Smoke from the pre-game fireworks shrouded the early proceedings in a heavy pall that lifted only slowly due to the humidity from a wretched day of rain.

Once it did, it revealed a fairly even game with a regular pattern. United mostly controlled the ball, combining quickly in search of openings between the Liverpool lines. But the Reds absorbed that pressure compactly and looked to catch their opponents on a turnover high up the field, in hopes of breaking quickly and in numbers -- ideally through the lightning quick Raheem Sterling.

United got the first real chance in the fifth minute, as Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez was served a sharp low cross by Ashley Young, who had in turn been set up well by Darren Fletcher. But the Mexican sort of stepped on the ball, rather than shooting it, and Mamadou Sakho cleared the scuffed ball before Mata could get to it.

Liverpool opened the scoring soon enough. Sterling, as he does so often, put his trickery and swiftness to good use and slipped by Phil Jones in United's penalty area. The defender seemed to bring him down and Liverpool got the penalty, which Gerrard converted.
For a time there, it looked like Liverpool would put the game away. Philippe Coutinho smacked a shot to David De Gea's near post from outside the box in the 24th minute, prompting a good save from the Spaniard. Sterling might well have been awarded a second penalty 10 minutes later when Ander Herrera sent him to ground in the box, but the Englishman didn't get the call that time.
Following a bombastic half-time show with shiny and shimmery pyrotechnics and a performance from some famous DJ or other, Liverpool continued to produce the better chances for a time. First, Gerrard cut out a poor Mata pass and fed Rickie Lambert in a promising position, but the striker's finish was very poor. Then, Coutinho and Sterling linked up well on two occasions in quick succession, although neither resulted in a goal.

The tide shifted then. Hernandez sent a deep, looping cross at Rooney. He picked it out of the air with a perfectly-placed, one-time, side-foot finish with his left that skipped in by the far post. Minutes later, Shaw squared for Mata just outside the box. Sakho lunged at Mata's shot, but it deflected past the helpless Simon Mignolet.

Mignolet was almost embarrassed in a weird moment a little later. A flukey ball soared over him and off the top of the goal, just behind the cross bar, onto a piece of metal that keeps the net pulled back. The ball bounced off that and back into the field of play, where the wide-open Rooney rolled it into the vacant net. To Liverpool's consternation, the goal was initially allowed to stand for a spell, before the correct call was made and it was disallowed.

United would get their third goal though, as Lingard rifled in a late half-volley from outside the box that settled in the low corner, outside of Mignolet's reach. It was a deserved score, in the end, and United were rightful winners of this tournament.
But new boss van Gaal downplayed the importance of winning in the friendly tournament. "We gave a lot of pleasure to the fans and that's very important," he said." And of course it's better to win in preparation time than to lose."

They'll hope that with this, they'll have put their disastrous 2013-14 season behind them -- for the new Premier League season now awaits.

Van Gaal has described the United squad as 'not balanced' and the Dutchman wants to sign a box-to-box central midfielder to bolster his side - but he is happy to wait to land a top-class target.

Arturo Vidal has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but while Van Gaal has declared his admiration for the Juventus star, club officials have been keen to play down any prospect of signing him this summer.

Interest in Germany international Toni Kroos earlier in the summer cooled before he joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich, while concerted interest in Real midfielder Angel di Maria looks like coming to nothing with the Argentine likely to join Paris St Germain if he leaves the Spanish capital.

William Carvalho of Sporting Lisbon and Everton's James McCarthy have also been considered by Old Trafford officials, while Netherlands international Memphis Depay could prove a target next summer - but not this.

However, Van Gaal is adamant that the club need not panic buy, and is more than happy to work with his current midfield options come the start of the new Premier League season - with a view to making a move for Strootman in January.

That means the likes of Tom Cleverley look set to initially be given a far bigger role to play at Old Trafford than many may have expected. The former Wigan Athletic loanee, something of a scapegoat during the David Moyes era, has been given the captain's armband in pre-season and is one of a few of the club's fringe stars with a point to prove in 2014-15.

Van Gaal worked closely with Strootman, 24, in his previous role as Netherlands coach and believes his compatriot is perfectly suited to the Premier League and the style he wants to implement at Old Trafford.

Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, is eager to provide Van Gaal with additions in the transfer market and has claimed the club are financially strong enough to break the world transfer record.

But Van Gaal is understood to have told Woodward to focus his attention on signing a central defender - Mats Hummels would be his dream signing, though a move for Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen is eminently more realistic at this stage - rather than chase high profile attacking players.

Old Trafford side set to welcome in club record signing.

Man United have seen a €60m (£47m) bid for Juventus star Arturo Vidal accepted and with the Chilean having already agreed personal terms a move to complete a club record transfer deal appears to be on the cards.

Van Gaal is keen to freshen up his brittle midfield and his push for added creativity, and a genuine additional goal threat, has led Man United to make a big money move for Vidal.

The Dutch boss has been in hot pursuit of Vidal for some weeks and the departure of Antonio Conte as Juventus manager has only aided their move to bring in the former Bayer Leverkusen man.

Louis van Gaal has a long running interest in Vidal, having attempted to sign the cultured performer when he was in charge of Bayern Munich, and now seems to have won the race to bring in the Juventus man.

Vidal has been pivotal in Juventus’s three successive Serie A title wins but the club’s inability to make an impact at Champions League level may have left him open to a fresh challenge.

Though Man United do not have Champions League action to offer Vidal in 2014/15 he will have been impressed with the club’s drive to enter a new era, post Sir Alex Ferguson, with the club’s owners keen to repair the damage suffered during David Moyes’s brief reign.

Man United will hand Vidal a four year deal worth in excess of £200k a week and though a deal isn’t entirely done and dusted it is thought that the club will bring in the 27 year old in the coming days and have reserved the number seven squad number for the incoming South American.

Van Gaal has already brought in Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw from Athletic Bilbao and Southampton respectively, moves that cost around £60m, and further signings are penciled in and as such a number of the club’s expansive squad look set for summer exits in order to balance the books.

Nani, Javier Hernandez, Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young are four players van Gaal is keen to cash-in on.

The only potential obstacle to a successful move for Vidal could come from PSG, who are also said to be keen on the Juventus man.
