Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benitez has claimed that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson puts a lot of pressure on match officials.
Benitez and Ferguson did not really get along when Benitez was the manager at Liverpool. Rafa had then said that Sir Alex verbally abused referees and their assistants.
“I always try to concentrate on my job, but at that time with Ferguson I was defending my club,” Benitez said in an interview with The Times.
“I could see what was happening from my point of view, and maybe now a lot of people are seeing the same things. I will not talk too much about that because it’s obvious.”
Ferguson came back under fire when he claimed that the linesman Simon Beck had a ‘shocking’ game when United drew 1-1 at White Hart Lane. Ferguson also said that the visitors “never got anything from that side of the pitch”.
United boss has been contacted by the Football Association and he has to answer for the comments he made until 6pm on Thursday.
“It’s a question for the FA what they do about it,” Benitez added. “What I said at that time was what I thought, and what I’m seeing now is similar.
“It depends on the FA. I don’t know what they will do – it depends on them. At this moment in time I have enough things to do here, so I want to concentrate on my job.”
Sir Alex Ferguson has however replied to this situation by giving a rather cold shoulder to Benitez.
“I am not bothered what Rafa says to be honest,” said Ferguson. “I have more on my mind.”
